Hey everybody! With SDCC fast approaching, we’ll be putting out a series aimed at helping those in need. Comic Con is not easy; it’s actually pretty hard. It took a few years for us to even get semi-good at it. During this series, we’ll be giving you tips for surviving the week with your sanity, and friendships, intact. First things first: food. Food is probably the most important part of keeping your wits about you. You’re gonna be tired, that’s a given. There is very little sleep at SDCC, and if you want to get into the very best panels, there’s not much you can do about that. What you CAN do, however, is make sure you are fed and hydrated. Here are some basics.
Protein and Granola bars
Protein bars aren’t the most delicious thing in the world. And, after eating them for 5 days straight, you’re going to want to kill yourself. They aren’t something you should rely on, but if you need something to get you through the rest of a panel or to your next meal, protein bars are a good choice. The protein will keep you feeling full for long enough to keep you from killing yourself or others! Cliff bars have been a popular choice among the 6NC, but you can’t really go wrong here. Granola bars are another good option; they aren’t as filling but have more candy in them!
Jerky is another great way to get some protein. It also has the added bonus of being super delicious. We had the chance to visit the Alien Beef Jerky store on our way to Vegas a couple of months ago, and I bought a couple of bags specifically for SDCC! Another bonus of jerky is that it takes forever to chew. Keeping your mouth busy will keep you from saying things you’ll come to regret later!
Now, if you’re feeling desperate for something that didn’t come out of a plastic bag, you can always brave the concession stand in the exhibit hall. The food is hot and usually pretty tasty. There are usually nachos, hot dogs, pretzels, and sometimes pizza. You can also buy soda, water, and even coffee! Just be sure you’re not filling up on too much soda so you won’t have to visit the little nerd’s room in the middle of the Game of Thrones panel that you spent two days in line for.
Sandwiches or Wraps
Never underestimate the value of a good sandwich. Sandwiches are comfort food, and for good reason: they’re so easy and so delicious. Last year, Adri came up with the genius idea of wraps! They’re like sandwiches but…wrapped. You buy all of the ingredients ahead of time and make the wraps or sandwiches you’ll need for that day, made to order! You can usually get a mini fridge for your room to keep everything fresh! These were seriously a lifesaver last year, and I will definitely be making these again!
Fruits and Veggies
Fruit is important, as you can only live on processed food for so long. After a couple of days, you’ll start to feel the effects of not having anything fresh in your system. Apples and oranges work well because they don’t bruise easily and can be thrown in a bag. Baby carrots work well and can also be thrown into a bag. You could also do raisins or dried fruit to get your daily dose of vitamins.
Speaking of vitamins—EmergenC. It’s sort of an unwritten rule that you’re gonna get sick after a con like this. You haven’t been sleeping, eating, or treating your body right. You’re surrounded by hundreds of thousands of other people who have been treating their bodies just as shitty. Taking some vitamins during your week of nonstop nerdery will help to lessen the onslaught of bacteria just waiting until you sit still for more than five minutes to attack! It may even put it off altogether. Probably not.
There are a ton of restaurants surround the convention center in San Diego. If you and your friends are willing to leave the convention center, spend a little extra cash, and venture into the Gaslamp Quarter, you can actually get a really great meal. Beware of restaurants offering specials or happy hour deals though. I mean, most of these places are legit, but a couple will tell you something and charge you another thing. Just pay attention to the rules of the specials and the hours of happy hours. We’ve made these mistakes before!
Staying hydrated one of the most important parts of SDCC. Like I said, you’re surround by hundreds of thousands of people, and it gets HOT! Especially if you’re in cosplay. You don’t want to end up on the local news or some guy’s blog because you passed out in the middle of the hall. Water, water, water. Drinks lots of water!
That being said, there is a time and a place for less than healthy drinking. The girls and I like to dedicate one night in San Diego to just going out, dancing, and getting a little silly. If you decide to do this, don’t get too crazy. If you have a busy day the next day, the last thing you’ll want is to be nursing a hangover. Coconut water helps with the morning after a night out, and Mel has even discovered an herb called Milk Thistle which is a supplement that detoxifies and protects vital liver functions. She used it during our week-long wedding extravaganza, and she swears by it.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for you, folks. Hopefully these tips can help ease some of your SDCC worries. There is no right answer for any one person’s Comic Con experience. It’s taken us a few tries to get this down so far, and we’re still learning! These things definitely help and hopefully they make your experience a little better! The most important part is to just have fun! We’ll be there all week and hopefully we’ll get to meet some of you! Have fun, nerds, and stay fed and hydrated!
